In recent years, “pickleball” has been spreading rapidly across the United States, beloved for its accessibility and fun. It is now said to be rivaling tennis in popularity, drawing people together regardless of age or athletic background as a “social sport” that naturally connects people.
Among women around their 40s in particular, it is gaining traction not so much as “exercise” but as a wellness habit they cansustain without overexerting themselves.
What makes this sport the go-to choice for adult women seeking that feeling of “I’m not pushing myself, yet somehow I feel great”? Here’s a look at the appeal of pickleball, the sport you’ll want to start right now.
What Is Pickleball?
Born in the United States in the 1960s, pickleball is a sport that blends elements of tennis, badminton, and table tennis. It’s characterized by simple rules and a court that’s more compact than a tennis court.
The biggest draw of pickleball is how low the barrier to entry is. The paddle is short, the ball moves at a gentle pace, and there’s no need to hit with full force.
You will find yourself sustaining rallies within just minutes, leading to that gratifying sense of accomplishment where you realize, almost by surprise, that you are already in the middle of a full-fledged game.
Whether you’re a complete beginner or someone who hasn’t been active for a while, pickleball is never too intense, never too difficult yet never unsatisfying. That “just right” quality is exactly why people want to keep coming back.
Why It Works for Both Wellness and Beauty
[1] A Gentle Workout that Improves Circulation
The pickleball court is about one-third the size of a tennis court. Even without running around intensely, the whole body gets a balanced workout. As you play, your body gradually warms up from the inside. Improved blood circulation brings benefits such as:
[Benefits of Improved Circulation]
- Reduces swelling
- A lighter, more energized feeling
- Deeper, easier breathing
The accumulation of these small changes leads to a real sense of “I feel good lately” and “my skin looks more radiant.” No matter how diligently you care for your skin, poor circulation can throw it off balance.
When things are working well internally, natural improvements start to show on the outside too.
[2] Conversation During Play Helps the Heart Unwind
Pickleball is a sport where conversation naturally flows during play. Players are relatively close to one another and movements are relaxed, so chat flows between rallies and before you know it, you’re laughing together.
Laughing, talking, connecting with people. These are all important components of wellness. When mental tension eases, facial expressions soften, and a person’s natural charm begins to shine through.
[3] Time Spent Outside Lightens the Spirit
Stepping outside, moving your body, and interacting with people regardless of age or background shifts the mood of everyday life.
Unexpected encounters, new communities, small sparks of inspiration simply having that time “open to the world” resets your spirit and creates moments of lightness in a daily routine that can otherwise feel closed off.
Tournaments Held in the Japanese-American Community Too
In California, pickleball’s popularity continues to soar, with tournaments even being held within Japanese-American communities. Recently, the “TAMUKEN CUP”, organized by comedian Kenji Tamura, was held in Southern California, drawing participants of all ages and backgrounds.
b.glen participated by providing prizes. What was most striking was that despite the competitive format, the atmosphere was far more about “enjoying” than “competing.” Every time a rally continued, cheers erupted; smiles and conversation arose naturally witnessing that scene was a powerful reminder of just what makes this sport so special.
Those Who Move More Notice Real Changes in Their Skin
At the tournament, we conducted a survey among participants about their skin.
People who exercise regularly tend to notice skin changes more readily. Though most participants were diligent about UV protection basics such as sunscreen and hats, nearly identical proportions cited these top three skin concerns:
• Dryness
• Sun damage
• Dark spots
Even with UV protection, it’s difficult to block sun damage entirely and especially in a dry climate like California’s, the combined impact of “UV rays + dryness” compounds easily. While UV rays get most of the attention, what often goes overlooked is the dryness that progresses after sweating.
After Sweating, Your Skin Is Where the Difference Is Made
When you work out, sweat can actually make your skin feel moist, but don’t be fooled. As sweat evaporates, it takes your skin’s natural moisture along with it, leaving you drier than you started.
The gym makes it worse. Sweating hard, then cooling down in blasting AC quietly strips your skin over time. There’s no sunburn to warn you. Just dryness that builds up until your skin feels tight, flaky, or irritated.
That’s exactly why it’s important not only to “protect against UV rays” but also to replenish lost moisture immediately.
For example:
- Moisturize right after exercise (don’t let time pass)
- Replenish both water and oil balance
- Use a sustained-moisture formulation to prevent daytime dryness
This extra step makes a significant difference to your skin’s condition after a workout. On days when you’re active, be more mindful of dryness prevention in your skincare than usual.
